Why Google for Jobs Is a Total Game Changer for Recruiters, Employers, and Job Sites

What Exactly is Google For Jobs?

Google For Jobs builds on the Google Cloud Jobs API, released in November.

According to Google, the API “uses machine learning to understand how job titles and skills relate to one another and what job content, location, and seniority are the closest match to a jobseeker’s preferences.”

The API can be purchased by companies to help them recruit better candidates on their job boards and websites.

Though still early, Google has seen promising results.

The next step was to ease the search process for job seekers, which brings us to Google For Jobs.

Google for Jobs combines the Cloud Jobs API with its powerful search engine features and puts it in the hands of job seekers.

To do this, Google partnered with job recruitment giants like Careerbuilder, Monster, LinkedIn, Glassdoor and many more.

The result is a streamlined job search engine that sorts and collects listings from all over the web.

Why it Works

Google’s new search presents a more practical and efficient approach to the job hunt.

By working with major job sites like Monster and Careerbuilder, Google allows users to see job listings from these sites and others as soon as they’re posted, while eliminating any duplicates.

Which means checking for jobs is now as simple as a Google search.

Ultimately, Google is determined to crack the code on matching available jobs with the right candidates, CEO Sundar Pichai said.

“The challenge of connecting job seekers to better information on job availability is like many search challenges we’ve solved in the past,” he said.

One of the biggest obstacles is the inconsistencies between industries and organizations in job titles and keywords used in job descriptions.

Google hopes to address this issue with its new search feature.

Pichai notes, “we worked hard to include jobs across experience and wage levels, including jobs that have traditionally been much harder to search and classify. Think retail jobs, hospitality jobs, et cetera.”

Because a hospitality job can include anything from front desk agent to security, Google uses its AI and extensive filters to supply job seekers with the most relevant results.

How to Use It

Google keeps the process as intuitive as possible, much like any other Google search.

Simply launch the search engine and enter in the type of job you’re seeking, for example “hospitality jobs.” A box will appear with a few of the top listings in your area; click on the more arrow to go to the full job search page.

If you’re looking for a specific location, type that in as well.

The majority of the search page displays the selected job and accompanying description, with company and position reviews pulled from sites like Glassdoor and CareerBliss.

On the left, you’ll find a scroll bar with all available hospitality positions, including the date the listing was posted.

Google also included extensive filters to ensure the best matches.

For example, in the hospitality realm you can narrow results by category (think restaurant, cleaning & facilities, etc.) or title (team member, room attendant, bartender).

You can specify whether you’re looking for full-time, part-time or contracted work and company type you’d like, such as accommodation or restaurant.

Have a specific company in mind? You can even choose to filter by employer to see if the company you want has any available positions.

If you don’t find what you’re looking for right away, you can choose to turn on email alertsfor that exact search. Google will send you an email whenever new jobs are listed.

How Employers Can Use Google For Jobs

The hunting and hiring process isn’t easy on employers either.

In fact, almost half of U.S. companies report they have trouble filling open positions with qualified candidates.

But Google has plans for that.

Not only does it offer its Cloud Jobs API, which can be accessed through Google Cloud, but it recently opened up the new jobs feature to developers and site owners.

Google’s official blog listed the following benefits to employers:

  • Prominent place in Search results: your postings are eligible to be displayed in the in the new job search feature on Google, featuring your logo, reviews, ratings, and job details.

  • More, motivated applicants: job seekers can filter by various criteria like location or job title, meaning you’re more likely to get applicants who are looking exactly for that job.

  • Increased chances of discovery and conversion: job seekers will have a new avenue to interact with your postings and click through to your site.

How to List Job Postings on Google

Developers need to follow two steps to get their listing to rank on the new jobs feature:

  1. Mark up your listings with Job Posting structured data

  2. Submit a sitemap (or RSS or Atom feed) with a <lastmod> date for each listing.

Time will tell how Google’s new jobs feature will affect the job market and competing recruitment sites. But if it delivers as promised, it could mean a major shift — and improvement — in the way applicants and employers find the right job matches.
